Message from Bishop Peter Baldacchino
What has been feared by so many has happened; war has returned as Russia has invaded Ukraine in a devastating and unprovoked assault. While being fought in a land that has suffered the atrocities of the past, this war brings with it the risk of a new world conflict. It has reminded us once again that we are one body of Christ; when anyone suffers, we all suffer.
Pope Francis has begged all of us throughout the universal Church to offer our fasting and abstinence this Ash Wednesday for the people of Ukraine who are under brutal attack in their homeland. I encourage you to make this a Day of Fasting for Peace.
Many have asked what can be done to help the people of Ukraine: Please pray for the people of Ukraine today and throughout Lent. Please pray the Rosary for peace in Ukraine.
And on Ash Wednesday, March 2, the special collection is for the Church in Eastern Europe. Our parish donations will be added to donations from around the United States to be sent to assist the Church in Ukraine to provide for the people. I ask you to be particularly generous.
Let us pray for peace and the conversion of the hearts of those who preach violence and escalate war, and for the safety and courage of the people of Ukraine. To Mary, Queen of Peace, we entrust the people of Ukraine. We thank you for your generosity in supporting the collection for Ukraine.
